FOOD 4U 2011 COMPETITION NOTICE
FOR THE PRODUCTION OF A VIDEO SPOT ADDRESSED TO STUDENTS AND TEACHERS OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS FROM 27 EUROPEAN COUNTRIES AND NORWAY
In the framework of the 7th edition of the awareness campaign on the importance of a healthy and correct diet called “FOOD 4U” which is promoted by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry Policies and addressed to students and teachers of secondary schools from 27 European Countries and Norway, a competition has been announced for the school year 2010 - 2011 for producing a video spot.
The purpose of the spot is to draw the attention of young people to the importance of being aware of food choice and diet. The 2011 edition is addressed only to students (aged between about 14 and 19) and teachers of secondary schools from Norway and from the 27 EU Countries:
Austria - Belgium – Bulgaria – Cyprus - Czech Republic – Denmark - Estonia - Finland - France - Germany - Greece - Hungary – Ireland - Italy – Latvia – Lithuania - Luxembourg - Malta - Netherlands – Poland - Portugal – Romania – Slovakia – Slovenia - Spain – Sweden - United Kingdom.
THE SPOT
The FOOD 4U competition envisages the creation and production of a TV spot, based on one of the following topics:
- making people aware of an informed choice of food and the risks as well as the negative consequences of an unbalanced diet for young people;
- the exchange of information amongst young people on their diet habits
- the importance of a varied and balanced diet;
- the importance of a healthy and correct diet;
- becoming aware of the value of fruit and vegetable products or other products detected as a basis of a healthy and balanced diet.
- Raising attention to excessive consumption and/or waste of food, also in view of malnutrition issues in the Third World;
- Incentivizing the consumption of food from eco-compatible production and distribution processes, biological agriculture, “zero kilometer” production and consumption, and the related health and environmental benefits;
- Stressing the importance of transparent information on the origin of food products.
- Addressing health harming behaviours, e.g. abuse of alcoholic drinks, and the resulting risks to self and others.
Target of the message: the European youngsters, who must thus be considered the major target and users of the spot.
The content of the message: the importance for young people to become aware of their food choices.
The video spots must underline the role and the point of view of young Europeans regarding one or more of the above listed topics.
All video spots shall be made in English or in the language of the participating group, with English sub-titles, and shall include the following:
- a brief profile presentation;
- a storyboard, I.e. the illustrated script of the spot, with drawings, to visualize the various passages in the video, including the texts, promotional messages, references for musics and background pieces;
- the backstage.
BACKSTAGE
The backstage video of a maximum duration of 3 minutes, will be useful to show the reasons behind the choices, the different stages and work techniques followed by the group of students and teachers, and their envolvement in the creation and production of the spot. It will also show the general atmosphere in which the work has been carried out, the mood, the abilities and “non-ability” of the characters and film makers. The images of the backstage will be considered as an integral part of the spot, one of the added value elements to be considered during the selection which will be made by the international jury. The backstages of the finalist video spots will be shown during the final event of the campaign.
The Ministry will reserve the right to intervene in the editing of the backstage for their screening during the Video festival or for any other possible uses.
VIDEO FORMATS
The video spots and the backstages shall be made in one of the following formats:
MiniDV - DVCam - Beta Cam
It is also required to send 2 copies of the Master in a DVD.
An internet version of the video spot must be sent, in addition but not as an alternative to the video, in one of the following formats: Macromedia Flash, Real Video, Windows Media Video.
LENGTH OF THE VIDEOS
- Spot: from a minimum of 30 to a maximum of 45 seconds (excluding any queue titles).
- Backstage: 3 minutes maximum
DEADLINE DATE OF THE COMPETITION
31 MAY 2011
By this date, all videos with relevant documents should be delivered by registered mail, courier or by hand to the address that will be indicated on the following websites at a later date: www.politicheagricole.gov.it
WORKING GROUPS
Each work may be presented by:
- a group of students belonging to the same class (maximum of 10 students);
- a group of students from different classes in the same school (maximum of 10 students).
Each group may be helped by one or more teachers involved in coordinating and assisting the students.
Should one group be selected as finalist , only the class or the group (maximum of 10 students) which will have directly contributed in the production of that spot may be invited to participate to the final event in Italy. This will also clearly result from the documents already sent to the Organizers, together with the video. Each group may not be accompanied by more than 2 teachers.
NEEDED DOCUMENTS
The documents needed for participating in the competition should include the following:
- FOOD 4U registration FORM, available on the web page www.food-4u.it, duly filled in, with the following information:
- name, full address, telephone number, fax, and e-mail address of the school;
- a list of the names of the students, authors of the video, with their dates of birth, class and section;
- name and surname of the teachers coordinating the work and their teaching subject;
- name and surname of the School Director in charge of the School;
- AUTHORISATION TO USE the spots on television, internet or at other events, signed by one of the coordinating teachers or by the Director of the School;
- a COPY OF THE FORM, supplied according to Article 13, Decree Law 196/03 - Privacy Code, available here duly filled in and signed by the Head of the School;
- a BRIEF PRESENTATION and the above-mentioned STORYBOARD
THE WINNERS
An international judging Commission, set up specifically for this event, made up of journalists, communication experts, nutrition specialists, advertisers, Institutes, Study and Research Centres and Organisations representatives, will select one spot from each one of the 28 Countries involved in this initiative.
The students and teachers of the school groups, authors of the selected video (maximum of 10 students and 2 teachers per group), will be invited to participate in an award stay in Italy, in a location still to be defined, in a period between September and October 2011.
In total, a minimum of 28 spots will be accepted for participation to the FOOD 4U Video Festival 2011. However, should the quality of the entries be particularly high the Organizers will reserve the right to increase the number of finalist school groups (subject to the minimum number of 28 groups selected) for those Countries whose videos stand out in quality and effectiveness of the message and consequently to reduce the number of finalist school groups for those Countries whose schools have presented lower quality and less effective videos.
The Organizers also reserve the right to increase the total number of selected groups up to a maximum of 40.
Any exception concerning the number of students to be invited to the award stay will have to be agreed upon and authorized by the Organizers beforehand.
COMMUNICATION TO THE WINNERS
BY 27 JUNE 2011
All finalist school groups will be informed about their selection by fax and/or email.
A complete list of the finalists will be also published on the web pages www.politicheagricole.gov.it and www.food-4u.it.
The Ministry will directly contact the finalist school groups to provide all the information on their participation in the award event in Italy. Each finalist school group is advised to supply the Ministry with a contact address of the School Director and/or of the coordinating teachers, in case the school is closed for the summer holidays.

TRAVEL EXPENSES
The Competition Organizers will pay for travel expenses to reach the location of the award stay ( return air or rail tickets from the Country of origin to Italy). All transfers while in Italy will be paid by the Organizers. However, school groups' transfers from their homes in their own Countries to the airport or railway station of departure for the journey to Italy shall not be included.
AWARD EVENT
The students and teachers of the school groups, authors of the finalist video spots, will be invited by the Organizers to participate (free of charge) in the 7th edition of the FOOD 4U Video Festival.
This event will take place in Italy in a location, still to be defined, of environmental relevance for its significant food and agricultural heritage, in a period between September and October 2011, and will include the following programme:
- stay of at least 4 days and 5 nights, free of charge, with full board in a tourist village or in a hotel;
- activity programme in the area (excursions, guided visits) aimed at getting to know the historical, artistic, cultural and food and wine heritage of the Region hosting the event;
- theme meetings and conferences on topics related to food and film making;
- the FOOD 4U European Video Festival, with the preview presentation of the spots and backstages of the finalist groups
The Video Festival Closing Ceremony will take place in Rome, at the presence of the institutional representatives. An international Jury, appointed by the Head of Department of MIPAAF and which will include journalists, experts in communication and advertising techniques, nutritionists and institutional representatives, will nominate the best European spot for the awarding of the FOOD 4U Award 2011.
USE OF THE VIDEOS
The videos and related material sent for the competition will not be returned. All the video spots sent for the competition may be used by the Ministry for all non-commercial uses they may deem appropriate, such as for instance their screening in public events. The Organizers will also reserve the right to facilitate and authorize their showing on local, national and international TV networks, as well as their publishing on internet web sites.
LIABILITIES
In sending the video for the competition, the school guarantees that the work presented is original and frees the Organizers and their institutional partners from all responsibilities towards any third party who, by any way, may have any objection about the uses provided for by the competition notice.
WAIVER
In case of renunciation of the award by a whole group (also due to overlapping school commitments), the group of students and teachers classified as second in the selection, be it from the same Country or from a different Country, will be invited to take part in the award event, according to the decision of the Ministry.
Should one or more students be unable to join the group, no replacement will be allowed, unless expressly authorized by the Ministry.
INSURANCE
The stay of the finalist school groups will be covered by a liability Insurance Policy (R.C.) including accidents, for all participants.
The responsibility of the Ministry will only cover their stay during the event. The return journey to reach the event location are not covered by this insurance policy since relevant insurance will be included in the travel documents.
